PJ Harvey has shared the video to match her latest single ‘The Community Of Hope’. Directed by Seamus Murphy, the visual splices together footage from the pair’s time filming around Washington, D.C, combining angular stills with shots of local people; at baptisms, drinking in cars, and eating in one of Ward 7’s few sit-down restaurants. It also visits a gospel choir as they learn their vocal parts for the recording of the song.
Driving around town with PJ, a man (possibly director Murphy) also speaks about the background of Hope Six - a new regenerative housing development - which is referenced in PJ Harvey’s ‘The Hope Six Demolition Project’ album title.
‘The Community Of Hope’ recently came under fire from Washington D.C. politiciansfor its unsavoury descriptions raising awareness around social issues in the area. Ward 7 has one of the highest levels of poverty in Washington D.C, and the second highest rate of unemployment in the city.
‘The Hope Six Demolition Project’ is out on April 15th. Watch the new ‘The Community Of Hope’ video below. DIY
