Dit jaar kwam REM nog met het album Collapse Into Now. Het was het vijftiende studioalbum van de band.
De groep heeft 31 jaar bestaan. De band wordt algemeen beschouwd als een van de eerste alternatieve rockbands.
De grote doorbraak en het commerciële succes kwam in 1987 met het album Out of Time. Dit inmiddels legendarische album bevat nummers als "Losing My Religion".
Maar ook het achtste album uit 1991, Automatic for the People, behoort tot zowel het commerciële als artistieke hoogtepunten.
Bekendste nummer van dit album is het prachtige "Everybody Hurts".
De band bestond uit Michael Stripe, Peter Buck en Mike Mills, tot 1997 was ook Bill Berry lid van REM. Hij besloot in 1997 om uit de band te stappen en als boer verder te gaan.
